Believer Poet Ministries Sponsors
Oggie Through World Vision

Ahrend Walters and Believer Poet Ministries sponsors Oggie Kayivwa through World Vision, a renowned Christian ministry organization that supports children around the globe.

Oggie, a Hope Child sponsored by Believer Poet through World Vision Oggie is a "Hope Child" and part of The Musele Project. World Vision began the Musele project in 1997. With the support of generous donors, they are working with families throughout this community to build brighter futures filled with hope for their children.

Many activities are under way to help meet immediate needs and promote lasting changes that will strengthen the community and move families toward self-reliance.

Current project goals include:

  • Equipping families and communities to care for orphans and vulnerable children while providing life-skills training to those affected by the AIDS pandemic.
  • Ensuring that boys and girls receive adequate health care and immunizations in an effort to decrease mortality from diseases such as malaria, malnutrition, and diarrhea.
  • Equipping Musele communities with the resources to provide children with a good education.
  • Offering adult literacy classes.
  • Helping families launch small enterprises to increase incomes, particularly those looking after orphans and vulnerable children.
  • Digging wells so that more families in the community will have access to safe water.
  • Advocating for the rights of women by offering seminars on gender issues.
  • Partnering with local churches to nurture the faith of children and families.

Oggie is a seven year old boy living with his parents, two brothers, and two sisters in Zambia, Africa, a developing country in South Africa. His parents struggle to provide for the family. Oggie, who is not in school at this time, likes to play with toys, he helps at home by running errands, and he's in satisfactory health. However, Oggie and his family live in a community severely affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis.

In some communities, AIDS affects the entire social structure as a generation of hardworking adults is being wiped out. Frightened children and exhausted grandparents rarely have money for food, school, or medical care. Through sponsorship, it's the Believer Poet's joy to know that he is able to help Oggie and his family with these and other basic needs.

It is Ahrend's deep desire to help other children such as Oggie. He also hopes to someday visit Zambia, "the butterfly in the heart of Africa". This country, surrounded by Angola, Zaire, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia, is the land of the legendary African walking safari, home of the Victoria Falls, the wild Zambezi River, breath-taking lakes and wetlands, a profusion of birds, abundant wildlife, and raw, pulsating wilderness. This country is an inspiration to the Believer Poet's writing.

Here is an original poem by the Believer Poet dedicated to his friend and Hope Child, Oggie Kayivwa. (Note: read the left column first, then to the right column, back and forth through the entire poem)

A Butterfly Story

Kar a Christian caterpillar
Many critters called her worm
Not a one would speak to her
Even when she’d give her toys
But Kar the Christian caterpillar
Those critters of the thickened wood
They didn’t care that she was kind
So she fully wrapped herself

Not a one could see her
Laughed Bully bullfrog
After that were many days
Asleep in prayer to Christ our Lord
She heard the voice of He our Lord
Saying you dear faithful child
Consume the silk that surrounds
I reward you loving one
my sweet and fuzzy friend
to hurt her deep within
with something nice to say
they wouldn’t let her play
she always chose to love
who would often shove
they always chose to hate
at an evening late

at where O could she be
she’s dead in the sea
she laid in a cocoon
until one afternoon
who spoke there to her mind
you faithful one of mine
and above you’ll fly
your limit is the sky

Luke 6:35 - But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

Lets Chizzle Now
By: Ahrend R. Walters
November 18, 2007

Written in love for those living in deprivation and disease

Across the oceans and here at home
where for health and food they roam

though the wood is truly hard
away to reach their troubled yard

they will find the life they need
as our flesh will crave for greed

rhymes that hold a blessing pure
at our hands He is the Cure
for our love they yearn and starve
a path to them we now must carve

come with me Lets Chizzle Now
through Christ our King the wisest Owl

if we will sacrifice at times
lets find a way to give them rhymes

and ones that give hope and peace
through Christ our Lord their cries can cease

Ahrend Walters continues to write original poetry and shares some of the poems he has written for and about children.
